Vincent Kamp
Contemporary British Figurative Oil Painter
Vincent Kamp is a Surrey-born artist widely acknowledged as one of the UK's most exciting figurative oil painters. Now based in Worcestershire, where he works from a dedicated studio, Kamp came to painting through an unconventional path: after his mother's death he took over the family engineering business for many years, setting his artistic ambitions aside until a pivotal study trip to Rome — where he worked with master painter Sean Cheetham — gave him the confidence to pursue painting as a full-time career.
His figurative work draws on a deep connection with the Dutch Golden Age — Frans Hals and Rembrandt above all — evident in the level of detail, command of light and shade, and the sheer psychological power of his subjects. Fascinated by urban subculture and cinematic storytelling, Kamp often writes a complete screenplay before casting characters for a new series of paintings — a process that gives each work a narrative richness far beyond the canvas. He also wrote, produced and directed the short film Queen of Diamonds, starring Georgia May Foote and Tamar Hassan.
Recent exhibitions include Diamond Roulette at the Ritz Casino London, the barbershop-inspired series Fear and Loathing in East London, and Inspired Lives, a tribute to pianist-songwriter Ruben James. Vincent Kamp's originals and limited edition prints are held in private collections internationally.
