Tom Butler
Contemporary Mixed-Media Collage Artist
Tom Butler studied illustration at Swansea University, graduating with a First Class Honours degree that sparked a lifelong fascination with photomontage and layering. His early career was spent painting and decorating while working to establish himself as an artist — a decade of quiet persistence that culminated in his first major solo show in London in 2013, from which point he has worked from a dedicated studio.
Butler's showstopping mixed-media collages transform found materials — crossword puzzle clippings, vintage maps, literary typography, printed ephemera — into vibrant portraits of the world's great cities and coastlines. In his hands, a section of newsprint becomes a cathedral spire; a wine label becomes a Venetian canal. The result is work of remarkable depth and playfulness, where art history, travel and the poetry of everyday objects collide.
A 2004 holiday in Uzès in the South of France first drew his eye to the way text and texture could live within a painting; subsequent travels to Paris, New York, Havana and Venice have continued to fuel his creative imagination. Tom Butler's work is exhibited in galleries across the UK and internationally, collected by those drawn to his uniquely layered vision of the places we love.
