We’ve been working with Maria Rivans since 2010. Maria is a Brighton-based contemporary artist who is best known for her bright and eccentric collages. The scrapbook style aesthetic is created by appropriating vintage ephemera and combining it with vivid, and often humorous, imagery. Maria adopts a fresh approach to collage by maintaining dialogue with cultures and imagery of the past and inserting into it fantastical cut-outs found in second-hand markets. We love the precision the artist applies to collating and assembling her compositions in order to find the perfect imagery to piece together each surreal jigsaw puzzle.
In the artist’s words: “I really get my kicks from the whole making process. It’s exciting watching an idea develop, I love the hands-on making approach I use to make my work and finally seeing the idea actualised into a final collage. It is very satisfying and then I can’t wait to make my next idea.”
After studying 3D design at Brighton University, Maria worked initially in jewellery design, but after a short while she turned her hand to collage and never looked back. Maria has exhibited artwork across the UK - including at the Saatchi Gallery - as well as internationally.
